It’s 1977 and you’re watching your mom at her dressing table applying lipstick to match her evening gown. Much like smell triggers memory and emotion, sound can also take you places, if you really let yourself listen. The sound of inspiration can come from any number of places, and often when you least expect it.

Roxanne Drolet shares her personal and professional history with audio, highlights a few stories of inspiration, and demonstrates the power of sound to hack creativity. She does a show and tell of sorts, debuting a 12-minute, sound-inspired piece called Seaside. The audio-drama tells the story of a family dealing with the mysterious events surrounding their father after he moves into an oceanfront retirement community.

About Roxanne

Roxanne Drolet is a writer/producer/musician and founder of Luckysound, a New England-based creative collective that writes and produces work as audio and as live performance.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Drolet composed original songs used in the NBC network television show The Black Donnellys, and the independent film Anything Once. She composed the original music for off-Broadway theater productions Love’s Labour’s Lost at the Looking Glass Theater in New York, and The Star Play which originated at HERE Performance Space in New York before touring. Other music credits include composing and producing a series of jingles for Heineken airing in seven countries and receiving a Miami Addy Award.

Her upcoming project 29 Paintings, premiering in Hartford this fall, is an evening of short vignettes inspired by visual art. By purposely ignoring the paintings’ actual subjects and back-stories, Drolet creates original characters inspired by (but not based on) the painted portraits.  Performed by actors together with large projections of the art that inspired them, each new “person” reveals ambitions, anxieties, and of course, some unexpected secrets.

Reminder: Bring an open mind and an open heart. And have a favorite beverage on-hand to enjoy a virtual toast!
